When you think of Milan, images of fashion, art and architecture often come to mind – but did you know 50 per cent of life science companies in Italy are based in the city?

It’s no wonder the ultimate fusion of people and technology can be found in the heart of Milan.

MIND, the Milan Innovation District, will be a major world-leading district for science, knowledge and innovation located on Milan’s famed 2015 Expo site.

Slated for completion in 2031, the innovative project is worth $3.6 billion and is currently in development by Australian real estate and investment group, Lendlease.

As the future home of a state-of-the-art hospital (Galeazzi Hospital), a world-class university campus (University of Milano Statale), a cutting-edge international research centre (Human Technopole), as well residential and commercial spaces, it will feature amenities and services for retail, hospitality, cultural, sport, entertainment – also acting as a creative hub for start-ups and innovative companies.

Recognised around the world for its award-winning projects, Lendlease is also setting new standards on the sustainability, wellness, safety and productivity fronts.

In fact, Lendlease has set itself the most ambitious carbon reduction targets for the real estate sector globally. This includes net zero by 2025 and absolute zero by 2040. Given what’s at stake, Lendlease firmly believes it’s no longer enough to make ambitious commitments without translating them into real and tangible actions.

For MIND, this means targeting Net Zero Carbon and power generated from 100 per cent renewable energy sources.

According to Lendlease Global CEO Tony Lombardo, the goal for MIND is to deliver to the people of Milan a city precinct built around innovation and sustainability.

“We’re aiming to create a healthy, diverse, and vibrant community with people at its core – a mixed use district where digital technologies enhance connections, promote the exchange of knowledge, and improve people’s lives,” he says.

“MIND is one of the best examples of our vision for a sustainable future and will become one of Europe’s most dynamic and connected places.”

MIND is a public private partnership based on a 99-year concession agreement – a first and major milestone for both Milan and Italy – and the nation’s biggest ever partnership of its kind.

Embodying Lendlease’s view on the future of urbanisation, MIND will harness the cultural and entrepreneurial spirit of the ever-changing Milan – contemporary, challenging and desirable.
